Labetalol, while generally well-tolerated, can cause side effects. The most common include dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. These usually are mild and often resolve with continued use or a dosage adjustment. However, inform your doctor if these persist or worsen.
Less Common Side Effects
Less frequently reported side effects encompass bradycardia (slow heart rate), hypotension (low blood pressure), and various gastrointestinal issues like constipation or diarrhea. Respiratory effects such as shortness of breath or bronchospasm (particularly in individuals with asthma or a history of respiratory problems) may occur. Rarely, patients experience skin reactions like rash or itching. In rare instances, liver problems have been reported; immediate medical attention is necessary if you experience jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) or unusual abdominal pain.
Serious Adverse Reactions
While uncommon, serious adverse reactions warrant immediate medical attention. These include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and hives. Significant drops in blood pressure leading to fainting or lightheadedness should be reported to a physician. Changes in heart rhythm or rate significantly deviating from your baseline are also cause for concern and require prompt medical evaluation.
