Always inform your doctor about all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Prednisone can interact with many medications.
- Blood thinners (anticoagulants): Prednisone can increase bleeding risk when combined with warfarin or other blood thinners. Close monitoring is necessary. Diabetes medications: Prednisone can raise blood sugar levels, potentially requiring adjustments to your diabetes medication. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Combining prednisone with NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen increases the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding. Potassium-depleting diuretics: Prednisone can deplete potassium, worsening the effects of these diuretics. Potassium levels should be monitored. Digoxin: Prednisone may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Report any of the following symptoms to your doctor immediately: severe stomach pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, rapid weight gain, muscle weakness, vision changes, or increased thirst/urination.
Avoid alcohol consumption: Alcohol can exacerbate side effects of prednisone, particularly stomach irritation. Avoid self-treating: Never adjust your prednisone dosage without consulting your doctor. Follow prescribed dosage: Strict adherence to your doctor’s instructions is paramount.
