Common Uses and Dosage Regimens for Hyzaar

Hyzaar, containing losartan and hydrochlorothiazide, primarily treats hypertension (high blood pressure). This combination medication effectively lowers blood pressure by acting on two different mechanisms. Losartan blocks angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels, while hydrochlorothiazide increases urine production, reducing blood volume.

Dosage varies based on individual needs and response. Your doctor will determine the correct dosage for you. Common starting doses include 50 mg of losartan and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide once daily. This can be adjusted, up to a maximum of 100 mg of losartan and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide daily, depending on your blood pressure readings and tolerance. Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely.

Beyond hypertension, Hyzaar might be prescribed for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with type 2 diabetes. In such cases, it can help slow the progression of kidney damage. The dosage here is also individualized, tailored by your physician to your specific condition and response.

Important Note: Hyzaar may cause side effects such as dizziness, lightheadedness, and fatigue. Inform your doctor of any adverse reactions. Regular blood pressure monitoring is necessary during treatment.
