What is a Tooth Infection?

A tooth infection, also called a dental abscess, is a bacterial infection of the tooth’s pulp–the soft tissue inside containing nerves and blood vessels. This infection usually stems from untreated tooth decay or injury, allowing bacteria to enter the pulp. The resulting inflammation causes pain, swelling, and potentially fever.

Types of Tooth Infections

Several types exist, including periapical abscesses (at the tooth root tip), periodontal abscesses (in the gums), and pericoronitis (infection around a partially erupted wisdom tooth). Each presents unique symptoms, but all require prompt professional dental care.

Symptoms often include intense toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, swelling of the gums or face, pus drainage, and bad breath. If you experience any of these, seek immediate dental attention. Early intervention prevents spread of infection and more extensive damage.
