Dosage, Administration, and Potential Side Effects: What to Expect

Both Nexium (esomeprazole) and omeprazole are available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, and delayed-release granules. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully regarding dosage and administration. Typical doses range from 20mg to 40mg daily, taken once a day, usually before breakfast. Always swallow the medication whole with water; do not crush or chew it. For Nexium, the delayed-release capsules should be swallowed whole for optimal effectiveness.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects for both medications include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. These are usually mild and temporary. Less frequent, but more serious side effects, include bone fractures (with long-term use), kidney problems, and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as severe stomach pain, black or bloody stools, or allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), contact your doctor immediately. Nexium and omeprazole can also affect nutrient absorption; therefore, your doctor may advise a vitamin B12 or other supplement.

Rare but Serious Side Effects

Rarely, both medications can cause more serious side effects, such as low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), leading to fatigue and muscle weakness. In some cases, they can increase your risk of pneumonia. While rare, a serious allergic reaction is possible. Regular monitoring, especially with long-term use, is recommended to detect and manage potential complications.
